Post #10 Response to EOTO: Gatekeeping theory

Today is class we had another group EOTO (Each One Teach One) presentation. This by far was my favorite assignment to complete in this class because we got to research and learn about political theories, awareness information, media sphere implications, and types of policies at play in our daily lives. I choose to write my response on gatekeeping theory because I believe this theory is very prevalent in our media today.

Gatekeeping by definition means the activity of controlling, and usually limiting, general access to something. You would think with all the progression that our world has created today that our access to media and information would increase as well but in actuality we have regressed. It is obvious that our news sources have biases such a CNN portrays a more liberal viewpoint and Fox News portrays a more conservative viewpoint so, if their is certain news stories that are happening that don’t fit the narrative that these companies are trying to portray they might cherry pick the story or just not report on it at all.

Today in class I learned some new information about gatekeeping theory. First off I learned that the government has freewill to censor any information that is publicized which is a scary thought because how do we know that the information that we are getting is the whole truth or even the truth at all. I also learned that the reasoning behind gatekeeping was to prevent the spread of “misinformation” and it made me had the thought that are the people behind gatekeeping, gatekeeping the reasoning behind it? Well we may never known. Lastly, the big take away I got from this presentation is that the more the people know, the less power the government has and we know that they will do anything to retain their power and control.
